Sunday August 7th Bradley Beach Congregation Agudath Achim honored the firemen and first aid volunteers, with a special breakfast. This was an opportunity to show our appreciation and thank these volunteers for their incredible commitment, and life-saving work. The children presented special hand-made thank you cards and were treated with a chance to dress up as a fire fighter.

Welcoming Shabbat at the Bradley Beach gazebo: An uplifting spiritual experience.
Rabbi Kelman deserves credit for this wonderful Shabbat Service and refreshments following the service. Not only was it a chance for community outreach but a delightful opportunity for a social get-together for the entire congregation.
Rabbi Kelman is bringing such programs to welcome all those seeking a Jewish spiritual home to our wonderful synagogue, Agudah Achim.
We also must include a note of thanks to our local Jewish Federation for their support in underwriting this special event.

Operation Thunderbolt - Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Raid on Entebbe
On Saturday evening July 2, 2016 at Congregation Agudath Achim a commemoration of the Israeli Raid on Entebbe to free hostages taken aboard Air France Flight 139 included a showing of a Documentary and Movie about the historic event.
Attendees were treated to a Pizza and Ice Cream dinner in addition to the two films.
The raid on Entebbe was a masterful plan created by the IDF to fly four transport aircraft from Tel Aviv to Entebbe in Uganda, where the hostages were being held. The raid and rescue was not without its casualties. Yonatan Netanyahu, older brother of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, was the only IDF fatality. Three hostages were also killed. The operation was renamed Operation Yonatan in memory of Yoni Netanyahu.

Our 2016 Summer Season has had an AMAZING start.
The Sisterhood started us off with a Challah Baking Evening - Thursday night
Followed by a Luncheon to Welcome our new Rabbi Kelman - and his family to the community
There was was the learning and conversation
- Perek in the Pews “What Judaism taught Macbeth and Andy Warhol”
- We had a guest speaker for Suedah Shilit - Dr. Yehuda Stolov
This morning we hosted a meaningful Memorial Program with Stanley Shapiro, a local resident and veteran of the Navy during the Korean War, accompanied by two fellow Jewish veterans and Mayor Gary Englelstad of Bradley Beach. Wh
ile we will recall all American soldiers, we pay special attention to the Jews who have fought for and fallen for America including special the 149 Jews killed at Normandy and who are buried at the Normandy American Cemetery.
Thank you all for making this Memorial Day weekend so successful. Wishing all our members who will be traveling - a safe and successful trip. Looking forward to hearing all your stories when you return to Bradley Beach.

A fundamental characteristic
of the Jewish calendar is that the festivals and other holidays always fall
during specific seasons each year – Passover in the early spring, Shavous in
the late spring, Chanukah around the start of winter. Similarly, the High Holidays invariable come
around just as the summer is ending and autumn beginning.
Rosh Hashanah, although it
occurs the first day of Tishrei, the seventh Hebrew month per the order
of months established by the Torah, is designated in the Mishnah as the start
of the new calendar year. The obvious
question is why do we begin each year with a month which not only occurs
in the middle of the count of Jewish months, but also at the very end of
the annual agricultural cycle which is framed by the major festivals of Pesach,
Shavous and Sukkos! Shouldn’t we start
our years with Nissan, the month in which Pesach, the first in the holiday
cycle, occurs, and the month in which growth and renewal begins again with the
start of spring?
Perhaps the significance of
Rosh Hashanah’s timing is to help us put the Days of Awe into their proper
perspective. Seeing the warm and bright
days of summer slowly waning, the daylight hours shortening more and more with
each passing week, cannot help but put us into a solemn and reflexive
mood. We think ahead to the dark and
cold winter soon to come and wonder how we will fare, both physically and
emotionally. In the farming societies of
our ancestors, this was also the time of year to fervently hope that the
resources gathered through the spring and summer would be sufficient to see
everyone through the lean months ahead.
With this frame of mind, we
are psychologically and spiritually prepared to approach the Almighty in prayer
and repentance, beginning on Rosh Hashanah, Judgment Day, and culminating on
Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Our
minds and hearts are properly attuned to the seriousness of this period, and of
the crucial tasks of reflection, remorse and
self-improvement that we are
about to undertake.
My wish to one and all for a
meaningful and productive High Holiday season, and for a happy, healthy, and
successful year 5776!

As President of our
Congregation, I ask you this New Year to take ownership of this wonderful
congregation, when you can, join us at Shabbos Services, events, learn with us
and socialize with our “shul family” after services at our Shabbat Kiddish.
Your shul Board consists of
your friends, they are devoted to you and the synagogue. We have met every Sunday morning for the past
three months to make sure we serve you to the upmost. They are extremely devoted.
We are blessed with kind,
caring and devoted chairs of committees and extraordinary volunteers. Look how they have cleaned up and organized
the interior of the shul. Organized the
Prayer Books, eliminated those in disrepair, ritually buried them, beautified
the social hall and a long list of more.
Give us your feedback, engage
us in conversation. We want to hear all
of your ideas and comments any way you wish to share them and please, volunteer
to chair and/or join or start a committee you think you may like.
On this Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kippur let us pray together that we be inscribed with a good, fruitful and
healthy life for us and humanity. Let
Congregation Agudath Achim help you bring spirituality and clarity in your
lives.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that the new Board of Directors of Agudath Achimand the many Committee chairperson have been busy working to improve your Bradley Beach shul experience.
Latest accomplishments:
All siddurim (prayer books) have been relocated to the front lobby.
Collection of damaged seforim (books) have been properly disposed.
The Social Hall is being updated and Kiddush is now served in the Social Hall.
The First Annual Book Exchange was a huge success on Shabbat August 15th.
The new board meets every Sunday morning and is actively seeking feedback from the congregation on new ideas and projects.
Another summer with Camp Dan has ended. We wish all the campers a great school year!
High Holiday services will be conducted by Rabbi Elie Rosenfeld and Adam Levitt if you have not made a reservation please call the office at 732-774-2495.
